Pregnancy Testing

Have you missed a period? Think you might be pregnant?
The easiest way to determine if you are pregnant or not is with a pregnancy test.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests are designed to detect the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the urine. The presence of hCG in the urine can be detected as early as ten days after conception, but it is recommended that you wait at least 14 days after conception or after you have missed your period for the most reliable results.

Taking a pregnancy test usually involves placing the end of a pregnancy test underneath a stream of urine, placing it in a cup with your urine in it, or placing drops of your urine on the pregnancy test.

Pregnancy Test Results

A positive result on a pregnancy test is indicated by the words “yes” or “pregnant” appearing on the small screen of the test or by the presence of two lines in the results area of a test.

A negative pregnancy test is indicated by the words “no” or “not pregnant” on the small results screen of the test or by the presence of only one line in the results area of the test.

Multiple factors can impact your pregnancy test results and render a false positive or false negative result, including but not limited to:

  • User error administering the test
  • Recent miscarriage or abortion
  • Fertility medications and treatments
  • Other medications

To verify whether or not you are pregnant, you will want to follow up your pregnancy test with an ultrasound.
